Oklahoma has so far secured a total of 12 transfers and signed 25 high school seniors to add to the roster for 2023.

RB
Oklahoma saw its future slip against the Seminoles.
A pair of OU freshmen, Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk, ran for 108 and 100 yards, respectively, and each scored a touchdown. The 2022 four-star recruit will likely lead the pack next season.
Barnes finished the 2022 season as the primary backup to starter Eric Gray, rushing for the NFL draft after 1,366 yards. Barnes finished his first collegiate season with 116 carries for 519 yards and five touchdowns despite appearing in 10 of Oklahoma's 13 games.

I
Oklahoma has four options, all likely to compete for starting positions in 2023.
There's McKade Mettauer, a freshman next season who started all 12 games in 2022, but occasionally fills in for Robert Congel, a sixth-year ineligible.
While Mettauer is the OU's most experienced guard, there are others who could push him out of his role.
Savion Byrd, a former top 75 recruit and freshman last season, started the Oklahoma game without regular starter Chris Murray. Then there's Jake Taylor, a former four-star recruit who played in seven games as a freshman last season.
OU also addedCaleb Shaffer, a transfer graduate from Miami, Ohio, who started 35 games in four seasons.
Finding the best player for the two starting linebacker positions will be one of the challenges for offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh next fall.
C
Rising senior Andrew Raym, the most experienced returner on the Oklahoma roster, will very likely be the starting point in season three.
Raym joined the Sooners as a four-star recruit from Broken Arrow High School in Tulsa. He has 17 career starts and has appeared in 31 career games.
OU also signed freshman Joshua Bates,a four-star recruit whose backup role could be key. Raym has struggled with multiple injuries in the past, including a shoulder ailment that kept him out of Oklahoma's final two games in 2022.
As long as Raym is healthy, OU has a lot of experience in the role.
DEFENSE
VAN
Outside of non-conference play, Oklahoma struggles to put consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. But with multiple additions, including strengthening the unit through the transfer portal, the Sooners are hoping for better production in 2023.
OU returns starters Reggie Grimes and Ethan Downs, who both had 4.5 sacks last season. Oklahoma also returns rising sophomore R Mason Thomas, who played in nine games and showed potential. The Sooners could also bring back sixth-year Jonah Laulu and fifth-year Marcus Stripling if they choose to use their extra year due to COVID-19.
The Sooners also added transfersRondell Bothroydof Wake Forest andTrace of Fordfrom the state of Oklahoma. A graduate transfer with one year of eligibility left, Bothroyd has been very productive with the Demon Deacons, making 14 combined sacks and four forced fumbles over the past two seasons.

POND

Kanak showed his potential with 10 tackles against Nebraska in the season opener, though he rarely appeared after that.
The duo will have to replace the production - 109 tackles - left behind by David Ugwoegbu, who started 13 games last season, buthe entered the transfer portal on 9 January.
Behind Stutsman and Kanak will likely be up-and-coming sophomores Kobie McKinzie and Kip Lewis, who were four-star recruits in 2022. OU also signed a four-star contractLewis Carterand with three starsPhil Picciottiin the recruiting class of 2023.
Cheetah

The Cheetah in the Venables defensive system is a hybrid position between safe and strong fullback.
CB
The Oklahoma corner room has no veteran depth. Woody Washington had one interception and 67 tackles while playing in every game last season and should lead the pack in 2023.
Jaden Davis and former No. 1 Oklahoma 2022 recruit Gentry Williams return and should feature prominently. Depth at the position took a hit as Graham moved to receiver, Trey Morrison and Justin Broiles declared for the draft, and Jordan Mukes, Joshua Eaton, Kendall Dennis and Bryson Washington were reassigned.
JUCO transfers Kendel Dolbyand talented four-star recruitsJacob Johnson,Makari VickersiJasiah Wagenerare among the players who should also compete for snaps.
S
Oklahoma signed three securities in the 2023 recruiting class and also added a transfer in former Texas Tech defensive endReggie Pearson.
Those additions combined with returning starter Billy Bowman Jr. and consistent contributors Key Lawrence and Damond Harmon should create a revamped room.
Bowman finished the 2022 season with 61 total tackles, a forced fumble and three interceptions, despite missing two games due to injury and limited appearances in three other games.
Peyton Bowen, the five-star safety who signed with Oklahoma after previously committing to Notre Dame and Oregon is an early entrant and should immediately be competing for photos. He is joined by four stars in the 2023 recruit classDaeh McCulloughand with three starsEric McCarthy.
