Oklahoma has so far secured a total of 12 transfers and signed 25 high school seniors to add to the roster for 2023.
Along with returning starters from Brent Venables' lackluster 6-7 first year as head coach, the Sooners, along with their additions, are aiming to be better than last season. OU finished the 2022 season with a 35–32 loss to No. 13 Florida State in the Cheez-It Bowl, its first loss since 1999.
Oklahoma lost 16 players to the transfer portal and 10 players to the NFL draft, including starting linebacker David Ugwoegbu, who last season was second on the team in total tackles with 110.
The transfer portal closed on January 18, but will reopen from May 1 to 15.Players are free to enroll after the portal closes, but if they choose to enter outside the window, they must sit out the season before being eligible to compete for their new school.
The last day to register for the OU spring semester is January 20If OU wants to add other recruits or transfers after January 20, they will have to wait until summer to join the program.
Here is OU Daily's roster projection for the Sooners in 2023:
Starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who threw for 3,168 yards and 25 touchdowns with six interceptions last season, announced his returnto the Sooners on January 5. The Big 12 Newcomer of the Year called OU his "forever home" in an announcement via Twitter.
Gabriel will have talent behind him in five-star Jackson Arnold, the No. 6 overall recruit and No. 4 going back in the class of 2023.247 Sports Composite Scale.Arnold led Denton Guyer to the semifinals of the Texas 6A Division 2 playoffs as a senior in 2022 and was named the 2022-23 National Player of the Year. Gatorade.
Gabriel will very likely be OU's starter again in 2023 with loads of experience, but Arnold could potentially push him if things go wrong.
Oklahoma also returns General Booty, who transferred from Tyler Junior College in 2022 and appeared in one game for the Sooners. Former four-star prospectNick Evers transferred to Wisconsin, while other backup options include former Pittsburgh transfer Davis Beville and Micah Bowens.
Oklahoma saw its future slip against the Seminoles.
A pair of OU freshmen, Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk, ran for 108 and 100 yards, respectively, and each scored a touchdown. The 2022 four-star recruit will likely lead the pack next season.
Barnes finished the 2022 season as the primary backup to starter Eric Gray, rushing for the NFL draft after 1,366 yards. Barnes finished his first collegiate season with 116 carries for 519 yards and five touchdowns despite appearing in 10 of Oklahoma's 13 games.
The Sooners will also return Marcus Major, a freshman next season who totaled 227 yards and four touchdowns last season.
Running back will be one of the deepest chambers in Oklahoma's roster.
The Sooners' wide reception area took a hit after the 2022 season.
OU's leading receiver Marvin Mims Jr. declared for the NFL draft after finishing last season with 1,083 yards. Former five-star recruit Theo Wease Jr., who caught 19 passes and four touchdowns in 2022.transferred to Missouri.Brian Darby also entered the transfer portal.
However, it was a win for Oklahoma to keep young standout Jalil Farooq in the fold and get another year out of Drake Stoops. The Sooners also received a transfer to MichiganAndré Antonius, who appeared in all 14 games for the Wolverines last season and totaled 19 catches and 328 yards in two seasons in Ann Arbor.
In the 2023 hiring cycle, OU added a pair of four-starJacqueize PettawayiKeyon bruin, who is most likely to see game time. Other notable returnees include sophomores Jayden Gibson and Nic Anderson, both four-star recruits in Oklahoma's Class of 2022. J.J. Also returning are Hester, LV Bunkley-Shelton and Gavin Freeman.
Another name to watch is D.J. Graham, who transitioned from cornerback to receiver midway through the 2022 season. The Sooners want more production at receiver in 2023hiring Texas Tech receivers coach Emmett Jones.
SBrayden Willis is going to the NFLThe Sooners have to fill a void. It helps that Austin Stogner, who previously played three seasons with OU,transferred back from South Carolina.
Stogner should get the most shots at the position and is looking to recover after posting 210 yards and a touchdown with the Gamecocks last season.
The Sooners must replace their offensive tackles after Anton Harrison and Wanya Morris entered the NFL Draft.
One of the spots will be stepped up by Tyler Guyton, a freshman next season who has started five games in Morris's absence. Handshake will likely be secondWalter Rouse, transferred from Stanfordwho started 39 of 40 career games.
OU also signed four starscayden greenand three starsLogan HoelandiHeide Ozaetafrom the recruiting class of 2023. Green, an early enlisted and top-10 ranked power forward in the country according to 247Sports', should have the opportunity to contribute right away.
Returning are future Oklahoma freshman Aaryn Parks and rising sophomore Jacob Sexton, both of whom played in OU's bowl game. Sexton started, but was injured on the first possession of the game for Oklahoma, and Parks replaced him for the rest of the game.
Other returners include future redshirt senior Marcus Hicks and up and coming redshirt sophomore Cullen Montgomery, both of whom have yet to appear in a game.
The Sooners have experience with their two likely starters, but are limited in their depth.
Oklahoma has four options, all likely to compete for starting positions in 2023.
There's McKade Mettauer, a freshman next season who started all 12 games in 2022, but occasionally fills in for Robert Congel, a sixth-year ineligible.
While Mettauer is the OU's most experienced guard, there are others who could push him out of his role.
Savion Byrd, a former top 75 recruit and freshman last season, started the Oklahoma game without regular starter Chris Murray. Then there's Jake Taylor, a former four-star recruit who played in seven games as a freshman last season.
OU also addedCaleb Shaffer, a transfer graduate from Miami, Ohio, who started 35 games in four seasons.
Finding the best player for the two starting linebacker positions will be one of the challenges for offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh next fall.
Rising senior Andrew Raym, the most experienced returner on the Oklahoma roster, will very likely be the starting point in season three.
Raym joined the Sooners as a four-star recruit from Broken Arrow High School in Tulsa. He has 17 career starts and has appeared in 31 career games.
OU also signed freshman Joshua Bates,a four-star recruit whose backup role could be key. Raym has struggled with multiple injuries in the past, including a shoulder ailment that kept him out of Oklahoma's final two games in 2022.
As long as Raym is healthy, OU has a lot of experience in the role.
Outside of non-conference play, Oklahoma struggles to put consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. But with multiple additions, including strengthening the unit through the transfer portal, the Sooners are hoping for better production in 2023.
OU returns starters Reggie Grimes and Ethan Downs, who both had 4.5 sacks last season. Oklahoma also returns rising sophomore R Mason Thomas, who played in nine games and showed potential. The Sooners could also bring back sixth-year Jonah Laulu and fifth-year Marcus Stripling if they choose to use their extra year due to COVID-19.
The Sooners also added transfersRondell Bothroydof Wake Forest andTrace of Fordfrom the state of Oklahoma. A graduate transfer with one year of eligibility left, Bothroyd has been very productive with the Demon Deacons, making 14 combined sacks and four forced fumbles over the past two seasons.
Born in Edmond and redshirting next season, Ford has flashed for the Cowboys in recent years. He has 8.5 career layoffs, although he has suffered multiple injuries. Ford tore his ACL in OSU's 2020 season finale before tearing it again in the off-season, forcing him to miss the entire 2021 season.
In the first full year of recruiting coach Venables and defenseman Miguel Chavis, Oklahoma was able to sign five-star PJ Adebawore and three-star Taylor Wein, who could also compete for snaps.
While the Sooners lost Jeffrey Johnson and Jalen Redmond in the draft and Josh Ellison, Alton Tarber and Cedric Roberts in the gantry, they retained Isaiah Coe, who totaled 20 tackles and two sacks in 12 games in 2022, and sixth-year senior Jordan Kelley , who totaled 24 bouts and three pitches in 13 games last season.
Replacing Redmond's four sacks won't be an easy task, but OU also added two home defensive linemen to the Texas State transferFrom that SearsI hand over Notre DameJacob Lacey.
Oklahoma also returns Gracen Halton and Kelvin Gilliam Jr. back, all of whom should see the field in 2023. Kelley totaled 24 tackles and three sacks in 13 games last season.
Linebacker could possibly be Oklahoma's most talented group in 2023.
The Sooners return Danny Stutsman, who last season as a sophomore recorded 124 tackles with three sacks and two interceptions last season. Sophomore Jars Kanak, a talented freshman last season who finished with 23 tackles and a force fumble, will join him as the likely starter.
Kanak showed his potential with 10 tackles against Nebraska in the season opener, though he rarely appeared after that.
The duo will have to replace the production - 109 tackles - left behind by David Ugwoegbu, who started 13 games last season, buthe entered the transfer portal on 9 January.
Behind Stutsman and Kanak will likely be up-and-coming sophomores Kobie McKinzie and Kip Lewis, who were four-star recruits in 2022. OU also signed a four-star contractLewis Carterand with three starsPhil Picciottiin the recruiting class of 2023.
With Stutsman and Kanak on the outside and weaker line positions,Indiana viersterrentransfer Dasan McCulloughshould step into the Cheetahs to replace DaShaun White, a three-year starter who entered the Jan. 1 draft.
A 2022 freshman, McCullough recorded a total of 48 tackles and four sacks in 11 games for the Hoosiers and was the 12th overall transfer, according to 247 SportsExpect him to play an important role now that Ugwoegbu is gone.
The Cheetah in the Venables defensive system is a hybrid position between safe and strong fullback.
The Oklahoma corner room has no veteran depth. Woody Washington had one interception and 67 tackles while playing in every game last season and should lead the pack in 2023.
Jaden Davis and former No. 1 Oklahoma 2022 recruit Gentry Williams return and should feature prominently. Depth at the position took a hit as Graham moved to receiver, Trey Morrison and Justin Broiles declared for the draft, and Jordan Mukes, Joshua Eaton, Kendall Dennis and Bryson Washington were reassigned.
Oklahoma signed three securities in the 2023 recruiting class and also added a transfer in former Texas Tech defensive endReggie Pearson.
Those additions combined with returning starter Billy Bowman Jr. and consistent contributors Key Lawrence and Damond Harmon should create a revamped room.
Bowman finished the 2022 season with 61 total tackles, a forced fumble and three interceptions, despite missing two games due to injury and limited appearances in three other games.
Peyton Bowen, the five-star safety who signed with Oklahoma after previously committing to Notre Dame and Oregon is an early entrant and should immediately be competing for photos. He is joined by four stars in the 2023 recruit classDaeh McCulloughand with three starsEric McCarthy.
With two-year starter Michael Turk preparing for the NFL draft after being exhausted from eligibility, the Sooners addedTransfer Luke Elzinga from Central Michigan, who will compete with the returning Josh Plaster and Brady Braun, who have yet to appear in a game.
Elzinga averaged 43 yards per punt last season and has a career high of 76 yards.
Oklahoma returns from Zach Schmitt, who made 12 of 18 field goals last season and converted all of his 53 attempts. Gavin Marshall, a gambler, should support Schmitt.
